Another day in the office. Did I have to go in? No. Was I in anyways because that is what management wants? Yes.
So I quit. I put in my two weeks and decided to follow my dreams.
But let’s start at the beginning for context. It wasn’t just a whim I felt one day, that would be crazy right? It was well thought out with a plan in place.
The Job
I spent 10 years in the accounting industry. I ended up spending a good chunk of that time in public accounting doing the traditional tax seasons. It is toted as a stable job that is able to be done in the comfort of a air conditioned cubicle. Corporate feels like organized chaos where everything has a place but no one truly knows and just guesses.
The Why
I knew from a pretty young age that I wanted to build something that I could call my own. The reason why I went into accounting in the first place was to have a solid financial foundation and learn as much as I could about other companies. In reality though I was tired of being held back.
I made a promise to myself in 2022 that in the next year I should be promoted or else I would quit. A little drastic? Maybe. I had it in writing when I did my yearly goals. A bit of a spoiler alert but I was passed up for promotion because I took a long vacation. Let us pause for a second on that. They had said nothing about the quality of my work but instead I took a 4 week vacation during the slow summer months.
Aside from that the main reason was I felt like I had the support to finally bet on myself. I had enough saved up to last me at least a year. I was on the husband’s medical insurance. The husband knew what I was like so he knows this has been my dream for awhile now.

The Plan
Truthfully, I was just playing it by ear. I knew I wanted passive income and to find a way to grow out of my shell. I got sucked into a ton of get-quick-rich schemes that did nothing but waste my precious time. The plan was to create a clothing brand and grow my personal brand. The real goal was to learn e-commerce and digital marketing even if it meant a ton of trial and error.
The Timeline
I gave myself 6 months to prove something — anything really. I kept telling myself that if I could make just $1, it was viable. Although I do have the ability to keep myself afloat for about a year, I wanted to put a deadline on myself to put pressure on.
The 6 month gap in my resume would also not look so bad, in my opinion at least. So if I really needed to find another job after 6 months, I think it would be possible.
The Feelings
Scared. Excited. Worried. I’ve never felt more ready though to try to create something of my own.
Scared that I might be making the wrong choice. What if everything failed and I just lost time climbing up the corporate ladder? On the flip side, what if I never took the chance and was stuck in a corporate job because of life and bills?
Excited to see what I can really do. It’s stressful to know if I fail it is on me. But this isn’t much different than if I’m working so hard to get a promotion and am excited for that. The difference is… one directly benefits me, the other benefits some board of directors somewhere.
Worried that I don’t have the right plan or idea. I want to do so much and see what would work that it now worries me. What if I spend my time doing plan 1 but that delays plan 2 that may actually be the winner? I’ve come to terms that failing is ok and it’s better to get it out of the way now than wait.
The Process
Time to just sit and grind out some work! Stay tuned for some updates and I hope, I really hope, that they are good.
Cheers to building something successful!
Thanks,
Nikki

[…] crazy that it’s been a year since I quit my corporate job. Time flies fast and that is something I did not take into account. Don’t get me wrong, a lot […]
